November TBR

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting for the last two weeks due to illness and a crazy teaching practice schedule. The latter will only get worse in November, so I hope to blog more but we'll see. These are the books I want to read in November:

1. The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

Currently reading this one! I got this from my wonderful Broke and Bookish Secret Santa last year and I've been saving this book for Halloween! I started it today but I'll continue in November! Really intriguing so far!

2. The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo

This book is gorgeous! Can't wait to read it!

3. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (Rise of the Empress #1) by Julie C. Dao

I read some good reviews about this one, so I'm excited to get to it!

4. Hunted by Meagan Spooner

I've been wanting to read this one for so long! The wait is finally over!

Which books are you planning to read this month? Have you read any of the books mentioned above or are you planning to? Leave your thoughts down below!

Review: How to Be Perfectly Unhappy by Matthew Inman, The Oatmeal

Matthew Inman—Eisner Award-winning creator of The Oatmeal and #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You—serves yet another helping of thoughtful hilarity in this charming, illustrated gift book for anyone who is irked by the question: "Are you happy?"

In How To Be Perfectly Unhappy, Inman explores the surprising benefits of forgetting about “happiness,” and embracing instead the meaningful activities that keep us busy and interested and fascinated.

I want to thank Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is a difficult book to review for me as it's very short but I'll do my best.
I'm not familiar with the author and his style but the title and the cover drew me in.

The art style is awesome! Simple, funny and cartoonish. How to Be Perfectly Unhappy tries to formulate what the concept of happiness is. I feel this is quite a large question to answer is a 50-page comic. That's probably why it felt rushed to me and I don't think it entirely succeeds in what it sets out to do.

That said, I still thought this was a fun comic about the author's personal thoughts about the subject but don't expect a life changing read.

I don't really know how to sum up my feelings in a coherent way, so I'm just going to end this review by saying that the comic is fun but too short. I gave it 3 stars. I really enjoyed the illustrations and I will check out more of The Oatmeal's work when I get the chance.

Review: Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story by Debbie Tung

Sweet, funny, and quietly poignant, Debbie Tung’s comics reveal the ups and downs of coming of age as an introvert.

This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung's experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie's life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert.

The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.

First of all, I want to thank the publishers and Netgalley for providing me with an arc copy of Quiet Girl in a Noisy World.

I identify myself as an introvert and that's the main reason I wanted to pick this book up. My uncle recently said at a family gathering that his daughter is an introvert and he wishes she weren't. That rubbed me the wrong way. Being an introvert is in no way inferior to being extravert. That's the other reason I read this graphic novel.

Quiet Girl in a Noisy World reads like a graphic novel memoir about Debbie Tung's experiences as an introvert. Her illustrations of a "social battery" perfectly portray how I feel about socializing and needing some alone time. Tung is able to explain how introverts experience things in a simple way while still keeping this a personal account of own.

I really liked Debbie Tung's art style, it's simple with mostly grey colours and the illustrations are beautiful.

The comic is made up of short chapters which are only a page or two long. I didn't mind this as it did follow a complete storyline throughout the comic.

I gave Quiet Girl in a Noisy World 4 stars! I identified with a couple of things but definitely not everything. I think this gives a well-rounded view on being an introvert and I highly recommend it to everyone!

October TBR

These are the books I plan to read in the month of October:

1. The Girl with All the Gifts (The Girl With All The Gifts #1) by M.R. Carey

I got this from my Broke and Bookish secret santa last year and I thought this would make the perfect Halloween read!

2. Flame in the Mist (Flame in the Mist #1) by Renee Ahdieh

3. The Young Elites (The Young Elites #1) by Marie Lu

Just finished Warcross and it was fantastic! Can't wait to read the sequel but while I wait, I want to read Marie Lu's only trilogy I haven't read yet.
